SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD, PART-TIME

DEPARTMENT: Ogden City Police Department

WORK SITE: MUST be able to respond to the job site within 10-15 minutes of notification. Proof of immediate ability for response may be required.

RATE OF PAY: $16.00 per hour 

SCHEDULE: 1.5 hours in the morning before school & 1.50 hours in the afternoon after school ends. Consistent daily attendance is expected each day that school is in session.


SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD GENERAL PURPOSE

Responsible for ensuring safe and orderly road crossing for students and other pedestrians at assigned locations during designated hours. This position supports the Ogden City Police Department's public safety efforts by promoting traffic awareness, monitoring and controlling vehicular flow near school zones, and serving as a visible deterrant to unsafe driving behaviors. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Escort and/or direct school children and other pedestrians across streets at designated crosswalks.
  • Monitor traffic flow to identify potential hazards and ensure vehicles yield appropriately at designated crossings for students and other pedestrians.
  • Use hand and verbal communication, high-visibility equipment, or other issued traffic control devices to safely control vehicle and pedestrian movement.
  • Remain visible, alert, and attentive to environmental and traffic conditions at all times.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with children, parents, motorists, and school staff.
  • Report unsafe driving behavior, hazardous conditions, or other problematic incidents to appropriate Ogden Police Department personnel.
  • Arrive to the work-site on time and remain at an assigned location for the full duration of all scheduled shifts.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with department policy and local, state, and federal law.
  • Understand, follow, and behave in a manner consistent with the mission and vision statements of the Ogden Police Department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of traffic laws and student/pedestrian safety regulations applicable to school zones.
  • Ability to recognize and respond quickly to potentially hazardous traffic or environmental conditions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently within established guidelines.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, walk short distances repeatedly, and work outdoor in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow department policies and take direction from supervisory staff.
  • Strong situational awareness and consistent attention to detail while on duty.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to act courteously and clearly with children, parents, motorists, and school personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Duties are performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, show, wind, ice, and extreme heat or cold.
  • May be exposed to vehicle emissions, road and traffic noise, and other environmental hazards typical of school crossing zones.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods during each shift.
  • Must be able to safely walk and stand on uneven, wet, icy, or otherwise potentially hazardous ground surfaces commonly found near crosswalks and roadways.
  • Must be able to maintain balance while standing or walking for extended periods, including on curbs, uneven surfaces, and/or in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity to accurately judge vehicle speed and distance, recognize/read traffic signals and signs, and ensure safe conditions before assisting or allowing students or other pedestrians to cross a roadway.
  • Must have adequate hearing ability to detect and accurately discern/understand approaching vehicles, audible warnings (e.g., horns, sirens), and verbal communication in a noisy environment.
  • Must have the physical ability to quickly respond to unsafe conditions for the purpose of preventing accidents or injuries.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and otherwise manipulate traffic control equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, including (but not limited to) hand-held signs and traffic cones.
  • Position involves split shift scheduling and requires flexibility in availability.

CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK

Successful applicants must pass the background check. 

DRIVER LICENSE REPORT (MVR)

Applicants must have a valid Utah Driver License. A driver license report (MVR) will be obtained by the Human Resources Division.
