LATERAL FIREFIGHTER/AEMT/PARAMEDIC
Annual Firefighter Salary Range - $56,281.50 - $80,106.13
Annual Paramedic Salary Range - $73,165.95 - $104,137.97
REQUIRED PREREQUISITES
Lateral Firefighter and Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic applicants must meet the following criteria. Lateral Firefighter and Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic applicants may be eligible, upon hire, to be placed in an equivalent Firefighter/Paramedic compensation step up to 8 years of service for each year of experience at a full-time department.
- National Registry or Utah Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or Paramedic (EMT-P).
- National Fire Protection Association Firefighter1and 2 (NFPA FF-1 & FF-2)
- Hazardous Materials First Responder -Awareness and Operations (NFPA HazMat Awareness & Operations.
Fire Certifications must be from either the Utah Fire Rescue Academy (UFRA) or any other certifying agency that provides an International Fire Service Accreditation (IFSAC) reciprocity certification. An IFSAC or Pro Board seal with a legible number must be present on copies of certificates including reciprocity. Copies of all prerequisite certifications must be attached to the application for the Applicant to be considered. Certifications can be uploaded to the application, faxed to 801-629-8735 or emailed to hr@ogdencity.gov.
COPIES OF ALL PREREQUISITE CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATES MUST BE ATTACHED TO APPLICATION BEFORE CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICANT TO BE CONSIDERED QUALIFIED TO TEST. IFSAC OR PRO BOARD SEALS OR LABLES NEED TO BE LEGIBLE OR CERTIFICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO SUBSTITUTES WILL BE ALLOWED IN PLACE OF A COPY OF THE ACTUAL CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATES.
POSITION SUMMARY
Respond to emergency incidents with assigned company. As an entry-level class, employee may have only limited experience but must have and maintain mastery of skills in the listed pre-requisite certifications. Receives immediate supervision from the company officer.
NIMS REQUIRED TRAINING
- LATERAL FIREFIGHTER/AEMT/PARAMEDIC - NIMS IS100, IS200, IS700, and IS800 within three months of hire.
LATERAL FIREFIGHTER/AEMT/PARAMEDIC ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position
- Employee is required to work as a team and consistently interact with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
- Employee is required to communicate in-person with the public
- Operate in Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments
- Respond to a variety of general emergency rescue calls including auto accidents, trapped persons, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials incidents
- Operate various types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, and lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment, lay and connect hose, maintain pumping apparatus; hold nozzles and direct water streams, raise, and climb ladders, ventilate burning structures, evacuate occupants
- Respond to emergency medical incidents, operate emergency medical equipment, analyze patient needs and administer basic life support, apply techniques for the control of airway, breathing, circulation, spinal immobilization, shock, patient packaging, and ambulance transport
- Participate in fire and EMS related training to comply with National, State and Industry Standards
- Obtain and preserve evidence at a fire scene
- Inspect building structures for compliance with fire codes
- Prepare reports
- Explain City fire codes and fire prevention policies and procedures to the public
- Clean apparatus and equipment at fire stations; perform general custodial duties as required
- Provide public information and instruction on fire prevention, CPR, and career opportunities
- Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the City
- Maintain good knowledge of City layout
- Complete one hour of physical training during each 48-hour shift
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES FOR LATERAL FIREFIGHTER/AEMT/PARAMEDIC
- Principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting
- Emergency medical, CPR and other medical assistance techniques
- Operation of ambulances
- Retain presence of mind in emergency situations, analyze fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action
- Drive fire department apparatus in an approved safe manner
- Operate and maintain radio/communication equipment
- Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties as specified in firefighter certifications and evaluated annually through the "Ogden City Fire Department Fitness and Testing Standard"
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include performing life-threatening firefighting activities in an emergency
- Position requires heavy lifting and physical maneuvering, demonstrate, and maintain physical abilities. Position requires running, walking, crouching, or crawling during emergency operations, climbing stairs/ladders; performing lifesaving and rescue procedures, moving equipment and injured/deceased persons, walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment and vehicles
- Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to fire encompassed surroundings, dangerous persons, dangerous animals, and hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, natural and man-made disasters
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, with the ability to resolve conflict in a safe and effective manner
- Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others, evaluating various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action
- Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Read, understand, and act in accordance with City and departmental policies, rules, and instructions. Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately
- Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment and vehicles when required by the position
- As needed, work additional hours outside of the normal and planned scheduled workdays.
