Description

This is a project-based employee role supporting the verification, validation, and readiness of our autonomous vehicle platforms. Development phases of this nature typically span through project completion (typically 2-4 years), though scope and duration are driven by business needs.

JOB SUMMARY

The Test Engineer (Test Planner) is responsible for designing experiments and data collection plans to verify and validate ASI's robotic and autonomous systems across the full system lifecycle, from individual components to fully integrated platforms. This role collaborates with cross-functional engineering teams to develop and execute structured test plans, coordinate manual and automated testing efforts, analyze performance data, ensure requirements traceability and safety compliance, and communicate system readiness, risks, and mitigation strategies; scope, autonomy, and strategic ownership increase progressively by level.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with program managers, systems engineers, software engineers, mechatronics engineers, and industry experts to understand concept of operations (CONOP), customer requirements, and system design intent

  • Design, develop, organize, and execute test plans, test suites, test cases, and data collection plans for hardware, software, and integrated robotic systems

  • Coordinate and support manual and automated testing efforts, including field testing and human-in-the-loop evaluations

  • Define and implement instrumentation strategies and data collection methodologies to measure performance, reliability, durability, and safety metrics

  • Analyze and post-process test data to identify trends, root causes, system limitations, and readiness risks

  • Ensure traceability between requirements, test cases, results, and safety or certification objectives

  • Document procedures, findings, issues, and recommendations; author formal test reports and readiness assessments

  • Support development and maintenance of automated test frameworks using tools such as Python or C++

  • Contribute to test environment development including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and simulation-based validation

  • Work cross-functionally to align development, test, and field deployment activities

LEVEL DIFFERENTIATION

Level 1 - Test Engineer I

  • Executes defined test plans and assists in developing test cases and data collection plans

  • Supports subsystem and component-level testing

  • Performs hands-on testing and debugging under guidance

  • Contributes to automation and documentation efforts

Level 2 - Test Engineer II

  • Independently develops test plans and data collection strategies for subsystems and integrated systems

  • Leads defined validation efforts and coordinates cross-functional testing activities

  • Defines instrumentation and test environment requirements

  • Contributes to improvements in automation frameworks and test processes

Level 3 - Senior Test Engineer

  • Owns integrated system-level test strategy and execution

  • Leads cross-functional validation campaigns and readiness reviews

  • Standardizes test methodologies, metrics, and reporting processes

  • Mentors junior engineers and influences design decisions through data-driven recommendations

Level 4 - Principal Test Engineer

  • Defines portfolio-level validation strategy and long-term test architecture

  • Drives certification readiness and functional safety traceability

  • Establishes scalable test infrastructure and data analysis standards

  • Serves as technical authority and advisor on system readiness and risk posture
