JOB SUMMARY:

Serves as a Part-Time Mental Health Unit Social Worker whose primary responsibility is to work in close collaboration with members of the Unified Police Department to support Field Implementation Training by serving as a resource to officers and collecting data on mental health-related calls, with the goal of enhancing training effectiveness and real-world application in the field."

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Investigative Resource:

  • Provides case management services for individuals, works with families, health care providers, and UPD staff to coordinate community resources and direct individuals to proper treatment options.
  • Identifies appropriate outside resources, such as community agencies, to assist individuals with interactions in their community and how to live with the individual's limitations.
  • Develops and implements individualized treatment approaches to meet the needs of each individual and their families.
  • May perform therapy activities for individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform Case Management duties.
  • Completes and updates all required reports for case management.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling or other closely related field.
  • Current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.) certificate for clinical practice in the State of Utah.
  • Minimum of five years' work experience as an L.C.S.W. is preferred; preferably in close coordination with a law enforcement agency.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current UPD Human Resources policy requirements.
  • Must be a resident of the State of Utah at the time of hire.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Ability to communicate verbally as well as in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and provide individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Ability to assess data regarding the subject's status and provide direction to community resources
  • Ability to assist individuals and their families and recommend resources including but not limited to working closely with local, state and federal agencies to ensure the individual receives the appropriate assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to sit and work on a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain valid operator licensing in the State of Utah
  • Able to perform general office administrative activities: copying, filing, delivering and using the telephone
  • Able to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

  • This position functions in the same capacity as a sworn detective as cases are being investigated on the same level, but with certain restrictions because of an inability to act in the same capacity as a sworn officer.
  • This position is a part-time, grant-funded, limited position
  • Employees will work approximately 20 hours per week
  • UPD Civilian Uniform attire
  • This is a time-limited appointment that will end on or about September 30, 2026
