Description

The Lifesaving and Care Specialist works with a dynamic group of animal advocates to facilitate Kitten Care Center cats and kittens into foster care and oversees the health, well-being and care of the cats and kittens at the Kitten Care Center. A typical day includes creating a welcoming experience for foster parents, matching foster parents to their perfect pet through lifestyle matching, working with fosters to troubleshoot any issues, providing in care foster expertise and neonate kitten support. In addition, specialists will mentor and support center volunteers and foster parents through classroom and hands on training and providing resources working towards building a skilled volunteer workforce to provide care and attention to the animals at the Lifesaving Center.

Purpose: Lifesaving and Care Specialists work within a team setting to oversee the health, wellbeing, and general care of cats and kittens at the Kitten Care Center. They have a unique role as the direct day-to-day connector between the animals in our care and our supporters. As such these specialists represent Best Friends through in-person work, conversations, and other activities.

Essential & Primary Duties/Responsibilities Include:

Outcomes & Ambassadorship

  • Support lifesaving objectives throughout the department, providing feedback and support for outcome plans, assist with all aspects of the foster and animal care process, regularly update animal information, provide superior customer service to visitors, volunteers, and foster parents.
  • Represent Best Friends' work to visitors and volunteers and speaking to Utah's no-kill goals.
  • Support a "volunteers-first" team giving every volunteer the opportunity to maximize their skills and value towards Best Friends' lifesaving activities, and inspiring visitors to continue the work in their communities.
  • Provide for the safety and hands-on training of volunteers, both individuals and groups, including orienting them to the assigned area and tasks; answering questions as needed.

Animal Care & Admissions Support

  • Perform daily animal feeding, continuous animal area, disinfection and sterilization, as well as medication administration and daily animal enrichment activities per standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor pet eating habits, behavior and medical habits/issues and ensure information is relayed to all supervisors/veterinary services staff and documented in database as needed.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, up-to-date records for all the pets in the building including; up-to-date and correct kennel cards, and housing locations.
  • Perform inventory of all animal care supplies including pet food, medical supplies, dry storage and cleaning supplies as well as daily pet population inventories as instructed by supervisor/manager.
  • Ensure all animal care team volunteers are trained in caregiving/handling policies and procedures and that any corrective action in real time is handled with professionalism and a teaching mentality.
  • Provide meaningful forms of engagement, enrichment and handling for pets in our care in order to prepare them for success in a home.
  • Perform intake exams on neonate kittens and cats, including vaccinations and other medications as designated by age.
  • Work with shelter partners to pick up, ready, and transport cats and kittens to the Kitten Care Center as needed.

Foster Program Support

  • Facilitate entirety of the foster process according to Best Friends Animal Society standards and philosophy to include (but not limited to): foster mentorship, maintaining medical/behavioral records, vaccinations, medical support, and client correspondence (emails / phone calls).
  • Adhere to/be acquainted with all adoption/client service/foster written policies, procedures, protocols, forms and support materials for adopters, clients, and fosters.
  • Provide consistent, enthusiastic, high quality customer service to clients who visit/call Kitten Care Center as well as resolving problems and addressing any client dissatisfaction
  • Maintain accurate animal records with most pertinent information to help place animals into suitable foster homes. Animal records include (but are not limited to): past and current medical examinations, on-site behavior and in-home behavior observations and notes.
  • Utilize shelter management software to efficiently track animals coming to/leaving Kitten Care Center, update relevant center documents and animal information as required.

General

  • Proactively report all maintenance / center repair issues.
  • Assist with animal bio writing, animal photos and videos as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of all Kitten Care Center supplies as instructed by the supervisor/manager, ensuring all necessary foster and animal care supplies are stocked and available at all times.
  • Deliver superior customer service relating to all visitors, adopters, fosters, and transfer partners in a friendly, informative, and professional manner.
  • Follow Best Friends policies, procedures, and tasks lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments; including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and record keeping.
  • Cover shifts at the Lifesaving Center or other departments as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.

  • 2 years previous experience working with cats and kittens preferred. Must be able to work and have knowledge of neonates, including those with health concerns and conditions as well as behavior conditions.
  • 2 years client service experience and experience interacting with the general public preferred.
  • Ability to make decisions on behalf of the organization to maintain intake standards for animal admissions approval into the Kitten Care Center.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Office 365, Internet, Shelter shelter software.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business. Ability to drive large capacity vehicles.

Physical & Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including (but not limited to): lifting and carrying, reaching, climbing ladders, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Standing and walking for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • On a daily basis, long exposure to animals of all temperaments and medical conditions.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule includes weekends, night, and holiday work.
