****VOLUNTEER ROLE**** Seeking candidates within a days drive of the sanctuary

A stipend of $450 a day plus gas reimbursement and lodging available with a 3-5 day minimum commitment

Organizational Impact: Shelters across the country are expecting to experience overcrowding, economic hardships, and staff shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This position increases the organization's ability to continue to provide critical services to shelter partners, local pet owners, and sanctuary animals.

The Sanctuary is home to a beautifully equipped, state-of-the-art veterinary clinic for homeless animals and you will be providing medical services to animals in need with the support of an enthusiastic and skilled veterinary staff.

Responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the clinic and expertise and comfort level of the veterinarian:

  • Examination, diagnosis, and treatment of sanctuary animals, employee animals, and some public animals.
  • Diagnostic procedures include, but are not limited to, interpreting radiographs, ultrasounds, fine-needle aspirates, nasal and tracheal flushes.
  • Rotating on-call duties
  • Collaborate with clinic staff as well department managers as needed on medical cases.
  • Complete medical records (with assistance from staff to navigate software).
  • Delegating duties and responsibilities to technical support staff or volunteers to ensure proper care and comfort of hospitalized patients.

Optional responsibilities:

  • Performing surgeries. This includes, but is not limited to, mid-to-high volume spay and neuter, soft tissue surgery and emergency surgery.
  • Routine spay/neuter surgery for sanctuary animals, local shelter animals, or community cats through the Best Friends Community Cat Program.
  • o Daily case load can be tailored to surgeon's skill and comfort level in most cases, dependent on scheduling.
  • Dentistry - procedures could include multiple extractions for dogs or cats, oral nasal fistulas, teeth trimming or other dental work for rabbits and floating teeth in the large animals.
  • Opportunities for treatment of large animals and exotic species.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum 3 to 5-day commitment
  • 8:00 a.m. approximately 5:00 p.m. (dependent on case load)


  • Veterinarian (DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree) with active license in at least one state; must provide proof of licensure (Utah license not required for veterinarians rendering services in association with a Utah-licensed veterinarian for a period of 90 days or less).
  • Current professional liability insurance (and must provide proof of coverage).
  • Submit cover letter and resume
  • Complete a brief phone interview with the Medical Director or Medical Operations Manager prior to volunteering.
  • High-quality high-volume surgical experience is a plus but not required.
  • Able and willing to adhere to clinic standards for anesthesia, sterility, surgical technique, and medical record-keeping.
  • Able to understand and adhere to all safety rules.
  • Able to remain calm and focused during emergent situations.
  • Demonstrates initiative to listen to instructions, ask questions to clarify if needed, and ensure that tasks are carried out correctly.
  • Positive attitude and enjoys working with volunteers and staff.
  • Able to communicate effectively through oral and written communication.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • Perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: walking, bending, lifting, carrying, twisting, reaching, stooping and squatting.
  • Interact with physically strong dogs, such as when walking on a leash or restraining for medical procedures.
